Trauma-Informed Yoga for Mental Wellness
3-hour In-Person Course
Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to...
1. List at least three mental health diagnoses that research indicates can be effectively treated with yoga
2. Perform at least two trauma-informed yoga chair postures suitable for use with mental health clients
3. Demonstrate at least one breathing exercise designed to support mental health clients in regulation and relaxation
4. Explain two trauma-informed adaptations to yoga postures and describe their benefits for clients with mental health concerns
Research indicates that yoga, when used alongside psychotherapy and/or medication, can effectively support symptom improvement across various mental health conditions. As a practice incorporating breathwork, meditation, and mindfulness, yoga enhances emotional awareness, regulation, and resilience while promoting stress relief and a sense of calm. Additionally, it fosters patience, body awareness, muscle relaxation, and the ability to activate a relaxation response.
Clients who engage in yoga may experience greater control over their bodies, emotions, and thoughts, as well as improved attention, concentration, and tolerance for physical and sensory experiences. When implemented through a trauma-informed approach, yoga has been shown to benefit individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, ADHD, sleep disturbances, and more.
This workshop will explore the therapeutic benefits of yoga and provide participants with trauma-informed chair yoga techniques. Attendees will learn how to integrate these practices into their own self-care routines, incorporate them into client sessions, and teach clients strategies they can use independently.
