Diagnosis & Treatment of Adult Sleep Disorders
3-hour In-Person Course
Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to...
1. Understand the impact of sleep disorders on mental health and daily functioning
2. Recognize common sleep disorders and their symptoms
3. Learn how to integrate subjective and objective measures of sleep to inform differential diagnosis of sleep concerns
4. Explore evidence-based psychotherapeutic approaches to treat sleep disorders
This course provides an in-depth examination of sleep disorders and their differential diagnoses in adult populations. Participants will first gain a comprehensive understanding of what constitutes a healthy sleep cycle and how deviations from it can impact mental health and overall daily functioning. The course will explore common sleep disorders evaluated by mental health professionals, and how to assess symptoms due to stand alone sleep disorders as opposed to symptoms associated with comorbid psychiatric conditions such as depression or post-traumatic stress disorder. The importance of integrating both subjective reports and objective measurements to accurately diagnose sleep concerns will be emphasized.
Participants will be introduced to evidence-based psychotherapeutic approaches for treating sleep disorders. The course will cover techniques such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia and Exposure, Relaxation, and Rescripting Therapy, among others. Additionally, the course will discuss the role of medication and over-the-counter supplements in the management of sleep issues, providing guidelines on when such interventions may be necessary.
By the end of this course, participants will have the knowledge and skills to effectively diagnose and treat sleep disorders using best practice guidelines in psychotherapy.
